Ambassador Jean Feyder addresses the Special high-level meeting of ECOSOC with the Bretton Woods institutions, WTO and UNCTAD, in his capacity as President of the Trade and Development Board of UNCTAD
On March 18th, Ambassador Jean Feyder, Permanent Representative of Luxembourg to the United Nations Office in Geneva, addressed the Special high-level meeting of ECOSOC with the Bretton Woods institutions, the World Trade Organization and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, in his capacity as President of the Trade and Development Board of UNCTAD. Under the overall theme of "Building on Monterrey and Doha : Achieving the internationally agreed development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals", Ambassador Feyder gave an outline of the input that the Trade and Development Board is preparing with a view to the MDG Summit in September 2010 and to the Fourth UN Conference on Least Developed Countries in 2011. He particularly insisted on the importance for States to play an active role not only in countering the consequences of economic crises, as is currently the case in developed countries, but also in the development of underdeveloped countries. He furthermore stressed the need to develop productive capacity in developing countries, in industry but also in agriculture, and to link it to the creation of the maximum possible number of jobs.
