Haiti: Security Council Debate

Under the Presidency of the Minister of Defence of Argentina, Mr Agustín Rossi, the Security Council held a debate concerning the situation in Haiti. In his intervention, the Chargé d’affaires a.i. of Luxembourg, Mr Olivier Maes,underlined the importance of the early holding of free, fair, credible elections that are open to all. He emphasised that the country should acquire an effective and inclusive system of governance and advance the strengthening of the rule of law and the respect of human rights. On a more positive note, he welcomed progress in the strengthening of the Haitian National Police and that the security situation remained relatively stable. Concerning the humanitarian situation, he recalled that Luxembourg remains actively engaged to help Haiti. Finally, Mr Maes reiterated the support of Luxembourg to the adaptable consolidation plan for the stabilisation of Haiti and the renewal of the mandate of MINUSTAH until 15 October 2014 as proposed by the Secretary-General.
