Luxembourg: Launch of the Fifth European Microfinance Week
On November 24th, the Minister for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Action, Ms. Marie-Josée Jacobs, launched, in the presence of H.R.H Crown Prince Guillaume of Luxembourg, the European Microfinance Week of 2009, an event that is held annually in Luxembourg.
The ceremony marked the official beginning of the fifth edition of this event which, from 24 to 26 November, gathered around 300 European actors from the field of microfinance around the theme of “Microfinance in a new financial era”.
In her speech, the Minister underlined that “in a time of global economic crisis, it is probably more important than ever to renew the commitment to sustainable aid and to proactively seek, in addition to our commitments in terms of official development assistance, alternative sources of financing for development. Microfinance and the inclusive financial sectors are promising in this regard and merit all the support that the public sector can offer. At the same time, it is essential to recognize that microfinance in all its aspects will develop all the faster if we proceed in a multidisciplinary and inclusive way.”
The opening ceremony at the Neumünster Abbey also offered the setting for the launch of the Microinsurance Network, which recently established its headquarters in Luxembourg.
