Luxembourg takes part in the 2011 United Nations Pledging Conference for Development Activities
At the conference, the Chargé d’affaires a.i. of Luxembourg, Mr. Olivier Maes underlined that in these times of lingering crisis, Luxembourg is more determined than ever to pursue its efforts in official development assistance (ODA) in order to contribute to fighting poverty and realizing all the Millennium Development Goals. He recalled that Luxembourg has been since 2000 among the very few countries contributing at least 0.7% of their gross national income (GNI) to ODA. In 2009, Luxembourg’s ODA has crossed the threshold of 1%. In 2010, our ODA has increased in absolute figures and reached 1.05% of GNI.
Mr. Maes highlighted the fact that in 2012, subject to the approval of the budget by Parliament, Luxembourg will maintain its contributions to the Agencies, Funds and Programmes of the United Nations at the level of 2011. The main contributions will be made in the context of a new generation of Partnership Framework Agreements, jointly signed on 8 June 2011 in New York with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF).
