Minister Asselborn co-chairs the first round-table of the UN General Assembly’s High-Level meeting on Desertification.
On 20 September, Luxembourg’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Jean Asselborn, co-chaired the first round-table of the UN General Assembly’s High-Level meeting on Desertification, together with the President of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.
In his opening remarks, Minister Asselborn recalled that the degradation of soils and drought are issues affecting the entire planet, be it directly or indirectly. In the spirit of the global partnership for development, there is an urgent need to find sustainable and coherent common solutions for these global problems. In this context, Minister Asselborn evoked the 1994 UN Convention to Combat Desertification, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Convention on Biological Diversity as the best framework to find solutions at the level of the United Nations.
