Minister Asselborn participates at the substantive session of ECOSOC
On 5 July 2011, the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Luxembourg, Jean Asselborn, participated at the Annual Ministerial Review of the UN Economic and Social Council, which focuses this year on "Implementing the internationally agreed goals and commitments in regard to education". In his statement during the general debate, the Minister stressed the need to redouble our efforts, not only in order to achieve the right to education for all, but also to implement the Millennium Development Goals. There’s a need for a holistic approach, at the national and international level, which has to be accompanied by a commensurate financial effort. The Minister also welcomed the initiative currently before the UN Security Council to include attacks against schools and hospitals, alongside the four other grave violations of children’s rights, among the criteria for listing parties as violators in the Secretary-General’s reports on children and armed conflict, and open the way to imposing sanctions.
