Minister Jean Asselborn participates in the Ministerial meeting "UNRWA @ 60"
Mr. Jean Asselborn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, participated on 24 September 2009 in the Ministerial meeting "UNRWA @ 60" commemorating the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East.
Luxembourg has been supporting UNRWA since the 1980s through voluntary contributions to the budget of the Agency and to specific projects and programs executed by the Agency. The volume of Luxembourg's contributions to UNRWA's budget has regularly increased, and UNRWA is presently the principal partner of Luxembourg's Development Cooperation for multilateral cooperation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. In 2008, Luxembourg's Development Cooperation contributed 3.4 million EUR (about 4.8 million USD) to the budget of UNRWA and to projects and programs in the fields of basic education and micro-finance, making Luxembourg the 19th donor to UNRWA in absolute terms.
In January 2009, Luxembourg's Development Cooperation responded with a 500,000 EUR contribution to the Gaza Flash Appeal launched by UNRWA to respond to the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza strip following the conflict.
At the Paris Conference of 17 December 2007, Luxembourg has pledged to devote 21 million EUR to the Occupied Palestinian Territories over a period of three years (2008-2010), first and foremost through contributions to UNRWA.
