Mr. Jean Asselborn, Deputy Prime Minister of Luxembourg, addresses the 64th General Assembly
Mr. Jean Asselborn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, addressed the 64th General Assembly on 25 September 2009. Minister Asselborn outlined why, in times of multiple global crises, the United Nations is the appropriate forum to formulate concrete, global and legitimate responses, be it to address climate change, the economic and financial crisis, armed conflict around the world or to advance disarmament and non-proliferation.
The Minister stressed Luxembourg's determination to continue to take its responsibility to help address the global crises, including by maintaining its efforts in official development assistance (ODA). Having spent 0.95% of its GNI on ODA in 2008, the Luxembourg government maintains the quantitative target of 1% of its GNI, but will also continue to insist on the qualitative improvement of Luxembourg's cooperation in order to further increase efficiency, in the context of sustainable development integrating the economic, social and environmental issues.
