Security Council Open debate on cooperation with regional organisations

Published Tuesday August 06 2013

Under the Presidency of the President of Argentina, H.E. Mrs Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, the Security Council held an open debate on the cooperation between the United Nations and regional and subregional organisations. A Presidential Statement was adopted after the Council's deliberations.

In her intervention, the Permanent Representative of Luxembourg, Ambassador Sylvie Lucas, underlined the necessity to reinforce the cooperation between the UN and the organisations in question, in the spirit of Chapter VIII of the UN Charter. She emphasised in particular the efforts made by the African Union in favour of peace and security on the continent, recognising that it was here that the cooperation was the most developed. She als recalled that the protection of children in armed conflict profits from regional initiatives and cooperation arrangements.
