Published Wednesday September 16 2015

On 14 September 2015, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa (UNOWA), Mohammed Ibn Chambas briefed the members of the Guinea Configuration of the UN Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) on the electoral process in Guinea. The members of the Configuration welcomed the signature of the Inter-Guinean Political Agreement (Accord politique inter-guinéen) of 20 August 2015. This agreement is a strong signal of the determination of all the actors to create an environment conducive to the holding of free, peaceful, inclusive and transparent elections.

The members of the Configuration welcomed the efforts by Mr. Chambas to foster the dialogue between the parties in Guinea and renewed their support for his good offices.

The members of the Configuration called on all stakeholders to respect the commitments undertaken, to exercise restraint, to show mutual respect and to conduct a responsible campaign. They stressed the importance of an equal access to the media and of a better communication by the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI).

The PBC Guinea Configuration reiterated its availability to accompany the preparation and holding of elections and in general to support Guinea on its way to consolidate peace and democracy.
