The Deputy Prime Minister Jean Asselborn at the 18th African Union Summit in Addis Ababa
The Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister of Luxembourg, Jean Asselborn, has participated as a guest speaker at the 20th session of the Executive Council of the African Union, in the framework of the 18th AU Summit, on 25 and 26 January 2012 in Addis Abeba. In his speech to the Council he highlighted the efforts of Luxembourg, in particular in the field of information and communication technology (ICT), to support the efforts of the AU and its Member States to boost intra-African trade.
On January 25, the Deputy Prime Minister met the President of the African Union Commission, Jean Ping. The meeting focused on political developments on the African continent. The current situation in Sudan and South Sudan, recent developments in Somalia and the situation in Libya following the fall of the regime of Colonel Gaddafi were inter alia discussed.
Jean Asselborn held also talks with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Ethiopia, Ato Hailemariam Desalegn, who welcomed the accreditation of the first Ambassador of Luxembourg to Ethiopia and the opening of a Luxembourg diplomatic mission in the Ethiopian capital.
